If you have ever lived with another person then you know sharing a bathroom can be a nightmare. Arguments over who is spending the most time in there, who needs to get in first in the morning and who isn’t cleaning up their mess can seem never ending. When designing a bathroom with couples in mind, these arguments can be avoided with just a little extra planning.
One of the main things to consider is that with modern busy lives both partners may be working long hours and need to leave the house at the same time. This means that one cannot wait for the other to be finished in the bathroom, they may both need to be in there at the same time. Therefore it is a good idea to have two basins and two sink units. This allows for each person to have their own space when washing and getting ready. A mirror above each unit is also ideal.
Many men think that women own too many bathroom products; creams, lotions, make-up etc. They want to be able to get to their own toiletries quickly and easily. When couples are sharing a bathroom space it is a good idea to have separate storage units. Not only will this avoid the “have you seen my….” arguments each morning, but also de-clutter the countertops making for a cleaner aesthetic.
The floor plan of your bathroom should be considered when thinking about couples sharing. It may be worth thinking about erecting partition walls to separate the toilet from the rest of the bathroom. This will allow privacy if one person needs the loo but the other is in the shower or bath. It means that both parties can still use the bathroom at the same time without embarrassment because even though you may be close, you might not be that close!
A luxurious addition to a couple’s bathroom is a larger, free standing bath. You can find baths that are made to fit two people, perfect for cosy romantic nights in. Having a free standing bath also allows for both parties to get in and out the bath on either side so that they don’t have to climb over one another if they are sharing.
As the room in the house most frequently used, it is important to consider everyone’s needs and what will work best when it comes to designing and creating your bathroom.
